Each year, the Prime Minister presents the Otago Daily Times Class Act Awards for ‘excellence’ to two students from each Otago secondary school in a ceremony at the Dunedin Art Gallery. The representatives from Mount Aspiring College for 2013 were Finn Moore and Jessica Bailey, our 27th and 28th ODT Class Act winners.
Jessica was acknowledged for outstanding achievements in kayaking and also for her contribution to sport and service to the college. She achieved NCEA Level 1 and 2 with merit and she hopes to become an outdoor pursuits instructor and guide, studying at Tai Poutini Polytechnic in 2014. Jess has always been fully committed to community and social issues, most recently as the face of the college’s Team Green group, the communications director of the 40 hour famine committee as well as the organiser and one of the participants in last year’s ‘shave for a cure’ campaign to support child cancer research.
Finn was acknowledged for his academic and his sporting achievements. Finn gained excellence endorsements at both NCEA Level 1 and 2 and was the leader of the college’s haka group, and was instrumental in raising the profile of haka and its importance within the MAC culture. Finn is our current sportsman of the year as well as athletics champion and captain of the college’s 1st X1 Football, Futsal and Volleyball teams as well as a keen basketball player. He travelled to Ireland with a New Zealand team to compete in the Milk Cup International Youth Football tournament and he also played for Otago United in the 2012-13 ASB Youth League, in which the team came runner up.
